This past month in Washington was another busy one, with more late nights battling Republicans as they consistently work against the American people. Their latest target was public broadcasting, proposing a Rescissions Package that would severely cut its funding. These Republican cuts to public media are not only bad, they are deeply concerning. Slashing already approved funding will hit families hard, especially those in rural areas across Georgia. Even Atlanta's own WABE, serving as Atlanta’s NPR and PBS stations, faces an immediate threat of $2 million in direct CPB funding cuts, alongside $1.1 billion in broader cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. You all deserve Let's be clear: this isn’t just about abandoning "Sesame Street" for Wall Street. It's about abandoning the children and families who enjoy everyday life, like my CarterCakes, and the rural communities who rely on these vital services. | Restoring Essential Healthcare Act | Good news! This month, a judge blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. This is a victory for every Planned Parenthood health center and for everyone in the Fighting Fifth who seeks the healthcare they need and deserve. In response, I am co-leading the Restoring Essential Healthcare Act to reverse Republican efforts to shutter Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health centers nationwide. As you know, before I was a Congresswoman, I was part of the Planned Parenthood family. I heard firsthand from patients about their fight for the essential and fundamental right to reproductive freedom and healthcare. Securing reproductive freedom means securing access to reproductive healthcare for everyone—no matter their ZIP code or their bank account. | As always, I am here to serve you! Please do not hesitate to contact my Washington D.C. office at 202-225-3801 or my District Office at 404-659-0116. I look forward to connecting with you soon! Want to see if you’re REAL ID ready: https://georgia.gov/get-real-id-compliant | Plain Prescription Prices Act | The Plain Prescription Prices Act mandates that TV ads display the price of all prescription drugs, addressing the cost struggles for 89% of Americans over 65 who use prescription medications. Prescription drug pricing needs transparency, especially since prescription drugs are among the few TV-advertised products without listed pricing. I joined my colleagues in introducing this bill, which enables consumers to hold drug companies accountable for unjustified price hikes, helping to alleviate sticker shock on life-saving medications. | Trump is using ICE as his secret police to target U.S. citizens and legal residents. I co-sponsored the Stop ICE from Kidnapping U.S. Citizens Act to ensure families in the Fighting Fifth and across the country are kept safe from Donald Trump and his cruel and illegal tactics. | K-12 Education Funding Letter
| Over the past few weeks, I, as well as other members of Congress, have been sending letters pressuring the Trump administration to release the withheld funding for education. After a month of relentless pressure, I can now say that $7 billion in funds frozen by the Trump administration, ensuring students and teachers have the resources to thrive this school year, have been released.
Read the full letter here | Voting is a right that every voter and federal employee in the #FightingFifth should be able to exercise. The Trump Administration’s actions to limit time off will disproportionately hurt federal workers, especially those who are also caregivers in the #FightingFifth. This time off is their only opportunity to let their voice be heard. This administration cannot be allowed to discourage civic engagement. In response to this, I wrote a letter to the Trump administration urging them to immediately reverse this policy. Read the full letter here | In committee this month, I passed the recently introduced the No New Burma Funds Act alongside Congresswoman Young Kim. Here in the Fighting Fifth, thousands of Burmese neighbors now call Georgia home and they deserve more than words, they deserve action. Investment in Burma was initially paused following a military coup that overthrew the country’s democratically elected government. This bill will require the U.S. to extend the World Bank’s pause on disbursements and financing to the government of Burma. Here in the Fighting Fifth, we stand with immigrants and refugees and it must stay that way. Watch my committee remarks here: | As August approaches, students in the Fighting Fifth are preparing for the new school year. Team Nikema participated in two back-to-school events, providing free school supplies and information to parents and families. They also shared details about service academy and app challenge opportunities with students. As a former public school educator, I understand that education is the foundation to opening doors for students in the #FightingFifth and nationwide. With current attacks on education from Donald Trump and Republicans, we have to continue to invest in our students and provide them with the resources they need to succeed. | #TeamNikema in the community
| This month, Team Nikema was out in full force across the Fighting Fifth, connecting with constituents at eight different "Congress in your Community" stops. We had the opportunity to meet you right where you are, assisting a constituent in finding resources for a veteran and providing the community with valuable information to address future questions and concerns. While I'm in D.C. fighting for you and ensuring your voice is heard in every room, my District team is always ready to assist. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
