Dear Friend,

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a year since I joined Animal Outlook as Executive Director. In that time, I’ve been deeply focused on advancing our mission to expose the truth about animal agriculture. But today, I want to take a moment to share more about myself—so you can better know the person leading this organization you care so much about.

My name is Ben. I’m originally from the UK, though I’ve called Los Angeles home for over a decade. I turned 40 this year, and my journey to veganism began in 2009 during an Arsenal vs. Manchester United UEFA Champions League semi-final (yes, I’m a bit of a jock).

I was raised vegetarian by my parents but started eating meat as a teenager. By my mid-20s, I realized they had been right all along: I could get anything I wanted at the touch of a button, why should anyone have to suffer because of me? Going vegan wasn’t sparked by a single event or a deep connection with animals—I didn’t grow up with animal companions—but rather by a strong sense of morality and the belief that we can change the world through our individual choices.

It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Almost immediately, I felt lighter—physically and spiritually. My energy leveled out, and I discovered the profound impact I could have on my health, the planet, and, most importantly, the lives of animals. Every meal became an opportunity to make a positive difference. I loved being vegan so much that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to it.

Right: Standing on the steps of NYC City Hall in 2019 with fellow advocates before testifying at the City Council committee hearing on the foie gras ban
In 2011, I founded my college’s Vegetarian Society and began tabling for change. A year later, I joined PETA as their press officer and officially began my career in service of animals. That journey eventually led me here, to Animal Outlook—a natural home for me and my vegan values.

I’ve been fortunate to work for three of the world’s largest animal protection organizations, gaining invaluable insight into how they operate. But I can honestly say that Animal Outlook is different. We’ve maintained our grassroots nature while growing into an accomplished and mature organization staffed by experts in their field. As a medium-sized nonprofit, we’re mighty enough to drive impactful change without being bogged down by bureaucracy.

Being able to make a difference every day in the lives of animals is what drives me. Whether it’s securing coverage in The New York Times for our Manning Beef investigation or exposing the illegal sale of foie gras in California by the world’s largest meat company, every day offers the opportunity to create change for animals—and it’s all thanks to your generosity. I’m enormously grateful for your support.

Now, I’d love to hear your story. What inspired you to go vegan—or take steps toward a plant-based lifestyle? Email me at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . We may even feature some of your stories on social media (bonus points if Animal Outlook played a role in your journey!).

Thank you for letting me share a bit about myself. I hope it brings us closer as we continue this lifesaving work together.
With gratitude,
Ben Williamson
Executive Director
