Hi John,
Last week a group of leading economists, including the French wealth inequality expert Thomas Piketty, called on the government to introduce a wealth tax. Pointing to the increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of a tiny number of people over the last few decades, they make the case for a wealth tax to promote a fairer economy and fund high quality public services for all.

According to Tax Justice UK, a 1-2% tax on assets of more than £10 million could raise £22 billion a year. The chancellor is now under growing pressure to tax the very wealthy more from Labour backbenchers, trade unions and numerous campaign groups. Many of those groups are now supporting our Make Them Pay demonstration in September – over 60 organisations have now signed up, with more joining each week. Will you be there too?

The same system that funnels wealth to the already-rich is also driving climate change. A handful of fossil fuel companies are responsible for half the world’s emissions. The people who have made billions knowingly destroying nature, and putting our futures at risk, must foot the bill for the green transition we need – one that puts ordinary people first.

We know it isn’t always easy for supporters to get to a London demo, but to help make it possible for more people, the Make Them Pay alliance is organising coaches from around the country. Places cost just £15 and can be booked on the links below:

We’re planning a big, bold, colourful demo on 20 September. The Make Them Pay platform will continue to push the government to tackle the climate and inequality crises together after the protest too, but a well-attended demonstration is crucial to the momentum of the campaign.

I hope to see you there.
