$267 million, John.
That's how much the Trump administration clawed back from national park staff funding through his "Big Beautiful" law. This is happening in the middle of the summer, when parks are packed and staff are already stretched to their breaking point.
These places have been part of my life for decades. When I got lost deep in the mountains at Sequoia National Park in 1989, it was park workers who saved my life. I think about that now, and I wonder: If it happened today, would anyone even be left to look for me?
While these devastating cuts feel like a gut punch to so many of us, what they can't cut is our stories. Our memories. And they damn sure can't cut our determination to fight back.
I was so moved to hear from so many of you after I asked folks to share what our national parks meant to them. I want to share just a few of the touching stories we received:
“In the last years of their life, while my partner was dying of cancer, we were able to travel all over the continental US together by car. We went to every national park and I have many wonderful memories of the things we did there.”
— Emily M.
“My happiest memories are of family trips to national parks where we camped and took in the beauty of the star-filled skies at night and hiked through meadows covered with wildflowers during the days.”
— Leslie M.
“I was fortunate as a young woman to travel by car across the US. My greatest memories are from the many parks where we camped. From Yellowstone, Glacier Park, Yosemite, and Muir Woods, giant Redwoods and more left me in awe of our country. The staff who guided us, warned us of bears, and protected the parks were wonderful people, caring and committed to the amazing parks they managed.”
— Patricia A.
This is why we fight, John. Not just for the precious land, though that matters. But for what these places mean to us, and for the people who protect them.
There is no denying that Trump is gutting our National Park System piece by piece and leaving our most treasured places defenseless. But I've spent my whole life refusing to back down from bullies, and I'm not about to start now.
Every climate champion we elect is another nail in the coffin of Trump's destructive agenda and another step toward the future our parks deserve. Will you join me in this fight with a donation of any amount today? [[link removed]]
