Unfortunately, there’s not a lot that has bipartisan appeal in Congress right now. But here’s one thing that does: banning congressional stock trading.

Last week, the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee advanced a bill that would ban members of Congress from owning and trading stocks—with bipartisan support!

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley joined all of the Democratic members of the Committee in voting to advance this long overdue reform.

For years, Congress has been plagued by growing public distrust in part as a result of members of Congress from both parties making problematic stock trades and owning stock in companies that they oversee and to which they appropriate taxpayer dollars.

Two recent stories illustrate the problem:

* The House Ethics Committee found that Representative Mike Kelly’s stock trades in a steel plant violated [[link removed]] the House code of conduct. Kelly lobbied the Trump administration for protections for a steel plant, and learned that the Commerce Department was going to help. The next day, his wife bought shares in the steel plant's stock, and then later sold them at a $65,000 profit.
* Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma appears to have violated [[link removed]] the STOCK Act by reporting stock and municipal security purchases years too late.

Until we ban congressional stock trading once and for all, we’re just going to keep seeing stories like these, and public trust in Congress is going to keep dwindling.

For years, CREW has advocated for a comprehensive ban on congressional stock trading. The time to put an end to this unethical practice is now.
