Raising a family isn’t easy and it definitely isn’t cheap. As a mother, I know firsthand how every dollar counts when you are working hard to provide for your children and plan for their future. That is why I was proud to support President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill. This law is helping Iowa families, seniors, and children keep more of what they earn while giving them real opportunities to build financial security for the future.
One of the most impactful provisions is the new $1,000 “Trump Accounts” for newborns. Every child born after January 1, 2025, will automatically receive a $1,000 investment account from the federal government. Parents and relatives can contribute up to $5,000 each year, and the growth is completely tax free. This account works much like a retirement account but is designed to give children a strong financial foundation. If contributions are made each year and the account is left to grow, it could be worth nearly $2 million by the time the child turns 28. That kind of security can change a child’s life.
But families need help today as well. That is why I fought to increase the Child Tax Credit to $2,200 per child. This means real dollars in the pockets of families as they pay for groceries, school supplies, and other necessities. Unfortunately, every single Democrat in Congress voted to cut this credit in half. We fought back and ensured families would receive the support they deserve.
Our seniors also deserve peace of mind. The One Big Beautiful Bill created a new $6,000 tax deduction for Americans over the age of 65. Married couples can deduct up to $12,000 from their taxable income. This is on top of the existing standard deduction and will help seniors on fixed incomes keep more of what they worked for.
Every one of these provisions was opposed by Democrats in Congress. They voted against newborn savings accounts, against the higher Child Tax Credit, and against tax relief for seniors. I voted for all of it because I believe Iowa families deserve the tools and resources to build a brighter future. And I will keep fighting in Washington to make sure they get it.
