SIGN NOW: Trump just fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics because he can’t handle the truth. Speak out now >>
John, Friday’s jobs numbers were weaker than Trump hoped or promised, so he took immediate action: firing the person who counts them. [1]
That's right. He's getting rid of the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics – a longtime civil servant confirmed 86-8 by the Senate [2] – to replace her with someone who will cook the books to his liking.
This sort of reckless, politically motivated firing is par for the course with Trump – but this one reveals his whole approach to governing better than any in recent memory.
When we have data that shows a problem in our country, a real leader would take action to solve it. To Trump, the only problem is that the facts make him look bad, and his only response is to try and silence the data gatherers.
This is outrageous – can you speak out to make sure Trump can’t sweep this one under the rug? Add your name to show your support for independent & impartial government fact-finding, and demand an end to Trump’s war on the truth.
John, I know this sounds like inside baseball – you probably don’t think about the Bureau of Labor Statistics very often. But I’m sending you this message because Trump’s actions go beyond just one agency.
Let’s break down what’s really going on: Donald Trump knows his party’s fate in the midterms hinges on his ability to deliver for ordinary Americans, and whether he keeps unemployment low is one of the best ways we have to judge that.
But after firing government workers en masse, decimating our economy with trade wars, and slashing millions of dollars from Medicaid, PBS, USAID, and the Department of Education, most of us are a lot worse off financially than we were just one year ago.
So instead of changing course, Trump is trying to stop the truth from getting out.
And his actions – baselessly disputing jobs numbers he doesn’t like, and sending a message to every other public official that they need to fall in line or lose their jobs – threatens Americans’ trust in the data our government collects and reports.
Add your name: Don’t let Trump cook the books on unemployment rates >>
