This week, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of Medicaid. As you may know, Democrats delivered Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act despite Republican opposition — and Republicans have never stopped undermining these life-saving initiatives for our families, including Trump's Big Ugly Budget. So going into this past week, we were part of a sacred vigil to kick off Save Medicaid Summer with the Caring Across Generations coalition. Moms, dads, children with disabilities, patient advocates, health care workers, my daughter and I took turns sharing stories from across the country.

Friends, we must “Own August” by keeping the pressure on Republicans in Congress who chose to strip Medicaid funding, food and other vital services from millions of Americans on Trump’s orders — in order to give massive tax breaks to his ultra rich MAGA donors. They need to know that the American people will never get over this act of cruelty and depravity and will not be distracted by the Republicans’ attempts to evade and deflect responsibility for the harm they willingly caused.

The American people did NOT give Republicans a mandate to gut Medicaid, to have their rural hospitals close, to have their insurance premiums increase or to rip away their access to health care altogether. But the American people will vote to have their health care restored, to cancel the cuts and to deliver the House majority back to Democrats with Leader Hakeem Jeffries as the next Speaker of the House – if Republicans do not act on the people’s demand to Cancel The Cuts.

Republicans know they can’t rip away health care and food from 20 million Americans to give tax breaks to billionaires without consequences, so they are trying to gerrymander their way out of accountability and out of another humiliating defeat at the ballot box like they faced in 2018 when Republicans lost 40 seats after coming for our health care. The Republicans’ threatened gerrymandering in Texas speaks to the poverty of vision and ideas of the Republican Party and would undermine the diversity that is needed in the Congress — the proposed map would dilute the voices and voting power of voters in several Latino- and Black-majority districts.

If Republicans follow through with their scheme to re-redistrict Texas to escape accountability for slashing Medicaid and denying flood aid to their communities, California Democrats will respond accordingly to meet this moment.

During this Protect Medicaid Summer, we must do all we can to cancel the Trump Medicaid cuts by reminding the American people about the Republicans’ Shameful Dirty Filthy Stinkin Lousy Rotten Anything But Beautiful Act. This sinful budget can help Democrats win the House — but Democrats would rather have Medicaid restored than have the Republicans’ devastating Medicaid cuts as an issue in the election, so our summer must be all about Cancel The Cuts.
