Dear neighbor,

On Wednesday night, I hosted a telephone town hall and discussed concerns about the health care cuts in the big, ugly law passed by Republicans last month. I was pleased to be joined by Dr. Anish Mahajan, Chief Deputy Director at LA County Department of Public Health; Dr. Mitesh Popat, CEO of Venice Family Clinic; and Dr. Andrea Turner, CEO of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. I want to thank our special guests for sharing their expertise on how these cuts are going to impact folks in our community, and thank you of course to everyone who joined and participated.

I won’t sugarcoat it: these cuts are going to hurt a lot of our neighbors. Approximately 14,000 residents in California’s 36th Congressional District are going to lose their health insurance. Statewide, $150 billion is being cut from Medi-Cal. We also expect health insurance premiums to increase, especially for those on the Affordable Care Act. Meanwhile, hospitals will face dramatic cost increases and may be forced to close or reduce services.

While this bill has been signed into law, some of the worst cuts do not take immediate effect. Ultimately, it is the power of the people that is always greater than the people in power. I believe health care is a human right, and I will not stop fighting back to cancel these cuts.
