At YIMBY Action, we firmly believe that cities require buildings to have an unnecessary amount of parking spaces, which takes away from housing, trees and parks, and locally-owned businesses. Plus, parking is so expensive, it typically accounts for 20% of housing construction costs. Costs that are passed off to you in high rents and mortgages. You deserve to live in and be surrounded by affordable homes, shops, and green spaces instead of giant empty parking lots. That starts with prioritizing people over parking!
We have multiple Chapters and partners working to pass parking reform in their communities, plus we’re advocating for a federal People Over Parking bill to end parking mandates nationally.
