Monday night's tragedy at a Manhattan office building was the deadliest
mass shooting in New York City in more than two decades. This mass
shooting was like so many others before—because the shooter used an
assault weapon: a weapon designed to kill as many people as possible, as
quickly as possible.

And even though New York has outlawed these weapons of war, the shooter
was able to bring his weapon across state lines. That's why we need a
federal ban on assault weapons now.

lawmakers this week urging them to ban assault weapons.

At the end of June, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein vetoed a reckless
permitless carry bill—but now, extremist lawmakers in Raleigh are working
to override that veto. Moms and Students Demand Action volunteers have
been gathering every week to contact their lawmakers, share videos online,
and reach out to their friends and local businesses to urge others to join
the fight!

Our movement is strong enough to stop this bill, but we need all hands on
deck. Take action with Moms and Students in North Carolina by texting NC
to 644-33.

Our student volunteers have been spending the summer sharpening their
advocacy skills, so they can go back to school ready to organize on campus
with power!

As the summer comes to a close, there's just one training left. [ [link removed] ]Join
SDA to learn how to create a welcoming environment for new leaders and
advocates to ask questions, get to know your group, and take action!

And if you missed our series this summer, don't worry—we'll have more
training opportunities coming this fall.

Research shows that Shoot First laws—which the gun lobby calls Stand Your
Ground laws—have increased gun murders by up to 11% nationally. That
translates to more than 700 senseless deaths each year.

These laws distort public perception of lawful self-defense—which already
exists in all 50 states—and encourage people to shoot to kill, even when
they can safely walk away. Shoot First laws embolden racists and
vigilantes to seek out confrontations, use violence, then claim
self-defense, and they have a disproportionate impact on communities of
color.

29 states currently have these dangerous Shoot First laws on the books.

In a major victory for gun safety, the United States Court of Appeals for
the Second Circuit upheld New York's historic gun industry accountability
law last month. The landmark law, passed in 2021, prohibits any gun
company doing business in New York from knowingly engaging in unreasonable
conduct that endangers the public.

This landmark law creates a new pathway for victims and their families to
hold bad actors in the gun industry accountable for their role in fueling
the gun violence epidemic. [ [link removed] ]Read more about the court's decision.

Shoutout to the hundreds of volunteers who joined us last month at our
Moms Demand Action leadership bootcamp and first-ever Students Demand
Action [ [link removed] ]Summer Organizing Institute!

We loved learning, making new friends, and building the gun violence
prevention movement with you—and we're excited for the work ahead.
