The American healthcare system is broken. The average American spends over $13,000 annually [[link removed](U.S.%20dollars,%20PPP%20adjusted)] on healthcare, more than twice what people in other wealthy countries pay. Yet the results are bleak:
* One in four Americans [[link removed]] says they can’t afford their prescriptions.
* Nearly forty percent [[link removed]] skip or delay important medical care due to cost.
* 100 million Americans [[link removed]] are in medical debt, the top cause of bankruptcy.
* The United States ranks last [[link removed]] in life expectancy, infant and maternal mortality, and preventable death among wealthy countries.
And Trump’s disastrous budget is about to make things a whole lot worse by gutting Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act.
The solution is clear: We need universal healthcare. While we work to get it passed on a federal level, Senator Ed Markey and I have introduced the State-Based Universal Health Care Act. This landmark bill would give states the power and resources to create comprehensive single-payer health care for their residents, regardless of income or employment status.
Quality, affordable health care is a right, not a privilege. It’s time for us to put the health and well-being of our people above the will of Big Pharma and profit-driven private insurance companies.
