Dear John,
Sixty years ago, our country took a step toward justice when Medicare was signed into law. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a beginning. A commitment to protect the vulnerable, to ensure health security for seniors, and to prove that in America, your worth isn’t determined by your wallet when you need care.
Today, that promise is being torn apart. Donald Trump passed brutal cuts to healthcare programs, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and yes, Medicare itself, all to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and corporations.
Already, every year, more than 68,000 people die because they are uninsured or underinsured, unable to afford a doctor’s visit, a vital prescription, or life-saving treatment. These are preventable deaths caused by deliberate policy failure. And the solution has been right in front of us for decades: Medicare for All.
Democracy for America has fought for years to make the vision of Medicare for All a reality. We helped launch this movement and organized relentlessly to elevate it into the mainstream. We’ve never stopped pushing, and we never will.
With Medicare marking a milestone anniversary, it's time to take the next leap forward in our fight. Let's expand it, improve it, and make it universal.
Medicare for All would end the insanity of GoFundMe medicine. No more choosing between rent and insulin. No more skipping screenings or cutting pills in half. No more families destroyed by medical debt.
It would literally save hundreds of billions of dollars every year while preventing tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths.
But Trump and the GOP are dead set on dragging us in the opposite direction, slashing healthcare to fund billionaire greed, privatizing Medicare through the back door, and letting Big Pharma and insurance giants keep calling the shots.
We can’t let them win. DFA has the grassroots infrastructure and organizing power to fight back, but we need you. The only way we turn this into a defining political battle is by building pressure, lifting up champions, and mobilizing people in every district, every state, every corner of this country.
Help build a system that covers everyone, eliminates cost barriers, and saves not just money, but lives.
It’s not enough to defend Medicare, we must expand it. And together, we will.
