IRS Destroys The Johnson Amendment As We Know It
For years, the IRS has looked the other way as religious leaders used their pulpits to promote political candidates. ([link removed]) Now, the agency will officially allow sermons to double as campaign rallies, where pastors can openly endorse political candidates.
The Secular Coalition for America and our member organizations have reached out ([link removed]) to the United States Secretary of the Treasury to let them know this IRS decision must be reversed.
You Can Now Proselytize At The Water Cooler (If You Work In The Federal Government)
In a blatant violation to church-state separation, the Office of Personnel Management (or OPM) released a memo that will allow federal employees to discuss religion in the workplace. ([link removed]) That includes conversations where an employee can persuade (i.e. harass) another to adopt their religion.
This troubling memo sets a dangerous precedent that will enable religious harassment not just in federal offices, but also in places like VA hospitals, national parks, and beyond.
