Yesterday marked the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, two of the most successful and beloved public programs in American history. It should’ve been a moment to honor everything these programs have accomplished. They’ve lifted millions out of poverty, ensured seniors could age with dignity, protected children and people with disabilities, and saved families from medical bankruptcy.

Instead, Republicans decided it was the perfect time to start burning it all down by passing the biggest healthcare cuts in modern U.S. history. Over $1 trillion slashed from Medicaid.[1] Nearly $500 billion will be automatically cut from Medicare. 15 million people are set to lose healthcare coverage. Tens of thousands of preventable deaths are expected each year.[2] Hospitals are already being forced to close.

And all of this is happening to bankroll a multi-trillion-dollar tax giveaway for the rich and corporations. The billionaires who buy elections are cashing in while working families lose access to cancer treatment, insulin, or the ability to see a doctor at all.

This was a calculated, cruel act of redistribution from the bottom to the top. Healthcare for working families was raided to keep billionaire donors flush with tax breaks.
