Register today for the Environmental Emergency Preparedness and Response Webinar Series

Large-scale environmental incidents and emergency events such as fires, floods, dam failures, and oil spills can and do occur in Michigan and have the potential to cause devastating impacts to human health and the environment. However, the damage caused by these disasters can be mitigated with proper preparedness and response. This webinar series is focused on helping business, industry, government, and the spill response community understand the complexities of preparing for and responding to large-scale environmental incidents and will provide an understanding of the various associated roles, responsibilities, regulations, and response technologies. A question-and-answer period will follow each presentation. Recordings of each webinar will be available on the Series webpage [ [link removed] ].

Future Fuels: Risks, Response, and Recommendations [ [link removed] ]

In response to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of reducing emissions from vessels, ship owners and operators continue to seek alternative or “future fuels” to power their fleets. These future fuels include liquified natural gas (LNG), methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels, and others, such as nuclear. Lithium batteries now power tugs and ferries. Each alternative fuel presents its own unique risks and challenges to understand, mitigate and manage. Future fuels also bring additional risks to life safety, the environment and the maritime transportation system, and unique challenges for marine casualty responders.

The information outlined in this presentation, includes incorporating experienced marine casualty responders in fuel system design and operational planning processes, revising National and Area Contingency Plans to incorporate alternative fuel response procedures and best practices, advancing regulatory and legal frameworks to address alternative fuel response operations, and properly training, equipping and exercising governmental and industry responders to prepare for the alternative fuel hazards, will promote public and responder safety while preventing potentially catastrophic marine casualties.

The webinar presenter, Jim Elliott, is Chief Operating Officer of the T&T Group of Companies, a retired senior Coast Guard Officer, and a past President of the American Salvage Association. Managing worldwide marine salvage, firefighting, heavy lift, commercial diving, and emergency response operations, he has four decades of leadership experience in maritime operations and has served as an Incident Commander, Salvage Master, Commercial Diver and Project Manager on salvage and oil spill response operations from the Equator to the Arctic. Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in Environment Management from Indiana University, a Master of Environmental Policy from the University of Maryland, a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies with highest distinction from the U.S. Naval War College, and an MBA from the University of Middlesex in London. Additionally, he has earned over 75 Federal, State and industry awards and medals, including the U.S. Coast Guard’s prestigious Inspirational Leadership Award and induction into the Commercial Diving Hall of Fame.
