Hi John,
The UK considering recognising Palestinian statehood is a sign that pressure on the government is building. But for this to be anything more than a tokenistic gesture, the UK must urgently enact measures to put material pressure on Israel to stop the genocide.
Pictures of dying children have been on our screens for weeks. And yesterday UN-backed experts announced that Gaza is entering a full-blown famine, the direct result of Israel’s merciless assault on Gaza, its weaponisation of aid, and its repeated, deadly firing on people trying to collect food. (1)
The UK has real leverage over Israel and could change things quickly, yet Keir Starmer refuses to use it. The UK is one of Israel’s top 5 trading partners, but it hasn’t used trade sanctions against the country. And it continues to provide Israel with a large amount of military hardware and weaponry. In this context, Starmer’s announcement looks like an attempt to distract from his government’s complicity – not an attempt to end this genocide. (2)
Will you write to the business and trade secretary now and demand the UK government holds Israel accountable for its crimes?
Yes, I will write ([link removed])
Palestinian statehood is the right of Palestinians – not a bargaining chip. Starmer needs to recognise this isn’t a war between equal parties, but an occupation and a genocide.
We demand that the UK takes real action now. This must include:
* A ban on trading with Israel’s illegal settlements
* Suspending the UK’s trade agreement with Israel
* Sanctions on firms involved in the occupation or the attacks on Gaza
* Banning all arms sales to Israel
The root cause of all this violence is Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land. As Israel bombs Gaza out of existence and moves to increase annexation of the West Bank, we must keep demanding sanctions. Anything less from our government is complicity.
Thank you for your support,
Tim Bierley
