OKDEMS Mourn the Loss of Governor Nigh

The Oklahoma Democratic Party is saddened by the passing of Governor George Nigh.

A giant in Oklahoma politics, Governor Nigh was our longest living governor. We are honored to have known him, worked with him, and to continue his legacy.

“Governor George Nigh left an indelible mark on Oklahoma. From our state song to our career tech system, his legacy is generational. He frequently reminded us that elected officials are not politicians, but rather public servants. We will forever aspire to his statesmanship,” said Representative John Waldron, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair.

Nigh served in the State Legislature, as Lieutenant Governor, and finally as Governor. He was the first governor to be re-elected in state history, and the first to win all 77 counties. His career in public service is distinguished and marked by a belief in a better Oklahoma.

Following his time as Governor, Nigh continued to serve our state with a selfless zeal. As President of the University of Central Oklahoma, he led the charge to modernize and expand the school. 

Just last month, Oklahoma Democrats honored Governor Nigh at the Carl Albert Dinner at our 2025 State Convention. He spoke for nearly 20 minutes, commanding the attention of the thousand-person audience, inspiring attendees with lessons from the past that give us hope for the future.  

As the man we have to thank for our state song, Governor Nigh reminds us that we know we belong to the land. And the land we belong to is a little bit grander because of Governor George Nigh.
