GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in IA-01

This week marks a year since one of the strictest abortion bans in the country took effect in Iowa. So we’re taking a look at one of the most flippable districts in the state and the country, where anti-choice Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks barely won re-election last year.
Last cycle, Miller-Meeks won by just 799 votes, making this the slimmest GOP House victory of 2024. On top of that, Trump won the district by 8 points, with Miller-Meeks squeaking by with a margin of just 0.2 percent. That’s a significant underperformance.
This tells us that Iowa’s 1st is not a solid red seat. It is one of the most competitive districts in the country. And with the right amount of investing and organizing, we can flip it.
In fact, momentum is already moving in our direction:
- Earlier this year, Democrats flipped a state Senate district inside this congressional district
- Miller-Meeks is facing a primary challenge from the right
- New polling shows Democrats can beat her in a head-to-head matchup
This is the kind of seat that will decide the House majority. It is also the kind of district where early action will make all the difference.
Swing Left is already laying the groundwork to flip IA-01. That includes early organizing and fundraising for the district’s future Democratic nominee. But it will take all of us to turn the tide.
