Sixty years ago today, Medicaid was signed into law — a landmark moment that helped turn a simple but powerful idea into policy: that health care should be a right, not a privilege.
I’ve seen firsthand how vital Medicaid is to families, from my early days working with children and families in Arkansas, to helping to pass children’s health coverage in the White House, to supporting Medicaid expansion efforts around the country. It’s one of the clearest ways we show who we are as a nation.
But today, that progress is being dismantled.
Just weeks ago, a bill was signed with a title as grandiose as its consequences are grave: the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It makes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts permanent, while paying for it with nearly $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid.
Let’s be clear: this bill doesn’t put people first. It puts politics and profits ahead of children, seniors, and families simply trying to get by.
