John, we need your help to stop a brazen incumbent protection scheme by Texas Republicans – one that could tilt the results of the 2026 elections if we don’t stop it.
Here’s how we got here: Donald Trump strongarmed his entire party – including House Republicans in battleground districts – to sign onto his Big Ugly Betrayal bill.
Voters are outraged – rightfully – that politicians are taking away lifesaving programs like Medicaid and Social Security from hardworking Americans to fund a billionaire tax breaks.
And, when the people we choose to represent us abuse the power we gave them… we get a chance to replace them next election.
That’s how it’s supposed to work, anyway. But to Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, people like you and me having a voice in government is a threat – a problem that needs to be solved.
So, Abbott is calling an “emergency” special session (typically reserved for natural disasters) to carry out Trump’s order: draw a new congressional map that gives Republicans five extra seats.
That’s right – these politicians realize their billionaires-first agenda is dreadfully unpopular with voters… but instead of changing it, they’re trying to change their voters.
It’s not just a Texas problem: Trump is reportedly pressuring Republicans in other states to follow suit, and now, California Gov. Gavin Newsom thinks that copying the GOP’s playbook will boost his national profile. They’ve set off a nationwide race to the bottom – where whoever wins, voters lose.
John, this can’t become our new way of governing. Our right to elect candidates of our choice is fundamental – and we can’t sacrifice it at the altar of partisan gain or shielding incumbents from the consequences of their actions.
That’s why Common Cause’s state teams – in Texas, California, and anywhere else where politicians are trying to carve out an unfair advantage – are drawing a line in the sand: no rigged maps, period.
So as Texas Republicans rush to draw these maps without public input or oversight, we’re bringing Texans from across the state to the Capitol in Austin – so we can stop Abbott’s unfair maps, or build a record for litigation if legislators force maps through.
We’re also launching massive advocacy and public education campaigns – including ads targeted at key swing votes in the legislature – to make sure that the politicians behind this scheme can’t evade accountability.
And across the country, we are putting both parties on notice that we won’t tolerate a redistricting race to the bottom – where politicians desperately try to out-gerrymander each other and destroy voters’ voices in government in the process.
John, we want to scale up these efforts – in Texas and nationwide – to stop this desperate gerrymandering arms race from becoming our new normal. With more resources, we can hold more lobby days, run more ads, and lift up more constituents' voices that politicians ignore at their own risk.
We need to make sure that We The People decide the 2026 midterms, not Greg Abbott, Gavin Newsom, or any other politician. If you’re with us, can you chip in $5 to defend your right to choose your leaders?
