John,
First it was the cattle and soybeans destroying Brazil’s forests and
drying out its rivers. Now, it’s the race to build giant data centers that
threatens to devastate our environment and biodiversity all over again.
Promising “development” and economic growth, tech giants are eyeing
Brazil’s land, energy, and precious water to fuel their servers, leaving
communities and ecosystems to pay the real price.
And Finance Minister Fernando Haddad wants to give huge tax breaks to lure
Big Tech. But his decision isn’t final yet. If tens of thousands of us
demand that he protect Brazil’s environment and people, not Big Tech
profits.
We can stop this. We only have a few weeks to act before it’s a done deal:
[ [link removed] ]Fernando Haddad: no tax breaks for Big Tech data centers.
While the government claims new data centers will “modernize” Brazil and
bring jobs, the reality is much darker. In Ceará, TikTok plans a massive
data hub in a city already suffering water shortages and worsening
droughts in one of the driest regions in South America.
It’s true that Brazil holds enormous freshwater reserves overall — but
access to that water is deeply unequal. Millions of Brazilians already
live with rationing, droughts, or polluted supplies. Data centers guzzling
millions of liters of water daily, pushing drought-stricken communities
closer to crisis.
And this isn’t an isolated case. Time and again, the Brazilian government
has chosen to pour public money into big corporations — from Big Ag to
mining giants — instead of supporting family farmers and local
communities. Now it’s happening again with Big Tech. They promise
“development,” but leave local communities to deal with the fallout.
Sign the petition now to demand that Finance Minister Fernando Haddad to
not give tax breaks for mega data centers unless there are strict
environmental protections, limits on water and energy use, and real
benefits for Brazilian people — not just foreign corporations.
Let’s not trade away our forests, precious drinking water, and our future
for Big Tech’s profits. Sign now and help protect Brazil from becoming Big
Tech’s next sacrifice zone.
