Team —
We filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to uncover the truth about the federal government’s deployment of the National Guard in recent immigration and narcotics enforcement actions in California.
From mid-June to early July, federalized units of the National Guard joined federal immigration and law enforcement agents in carrying out raids on cannabis farms in Coachella Valley, Camarillo, and Carpinteria. In one instance, the National Guard appears to have assisted federal agents by holding a perimeter with ballistic shields. Public reporting indicates that a farmworker, Jaime Alanís, fell to his death during one of the militarized raids.
Despite the dangerous and unprecedented measure of deploying the military in support of immigration raids, and against civilians, the public still lacks clear information about the federalized National Guard’s role and whether it was misused.
We won’t allow the federal government’s efforts to weaponize the U.S. military against immigrant communities and democratic values to go unchallenged. We demand accountability and transparency.
Our FOIA request will demand answers from the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. NILC is committed to shining a light on these operations and protecting the rights and safety of our communities.
We’ll keep you posted as we push for the truth.
Stay tuned,
— National Immigration Law Center
