We recently polled folks across Iowa after the passage of the Billionaire Bailout Bill, and one thing stood out loud and clear: Everyone is worried about their healthcare.

And it’s easy to see why. The Gazette just reported that 20 rural Iowa hospitals are at risk of closing, with five facing immediate danger, including in Joni Ernst’s hometown of Red Oak. That means families in small towns could lose their lifeline for emergency care, maternity services, and even basic checkups.

Hospitals may have to cut staff, reduce services, or close altogether — and it’s not just Medicaid patients who’ll suffer. Everyone in those communities depends on these facilities.

I grew up in Sioux City and have seen firsthand what happens when communities lose access to care. These cuts would hit rural Iowa hardest, where people are already struggling.

Some Republicans say they want to protect rural hospitals, but their budget priorities tell a different story. I’m running for U.S. Senate because Iowans deserve better than that.
