Trump knows that it’s been the lower federal courts that have served as
some of the last lines of defense. Judges have blocked illegal overreach,
protected fundamental rights, and slowed Trump’s march toward
authoritarian rule. That’s why he’s so focused on putting more of his
rubber-stamp nominees on the bench.

With a Republican-led Congress looking the other way – and in most cases,
cheering him on – Trump has faced almost no institutional checks on his
power. That’s why the lower courts matter so much. They’ve been one of the
only forces capable of slowing this regime down.
