Earlier this month, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued a warning: climate inaction is a human rights violation. Ten days later, the International Court of Justice went further, declaring that governments who fail to act on climate change may be held legally accountable, including through financial penalties.
Two landmark rulings. A clear legal signal. And not a word from Canada.
No statement from the Prime Minister. No response from Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin. Not even after major environmental groups hand-delivered a letter urging her to uphold our international obligations under the Paris Agreement and protect the right to a healthy environment.
This silence isn’t neutral.
Canada could be on the hook for hundreds of billions in compensation so fossil fuel corporations can continue to profit in the short term. If Canada is found liable, it’s taxpayers who will be paying — not the industry causing the harm.
As Green Party leader Elizabeth May said in a statement yesterday, “The days of climate impunity are over.”
The government’s silence protects a system where private profits come first — and we pay the price.
If we don’t push back now, they'll keep siding with polluters and leave Canadians on the hook. Help us change that.
