🙋‍♀️ Now that years have passed, what has stayed with you from your Power of Diverse Voices experience?
Coming to Poynter for the first time never leaves you. Back in 2017, I was a cub reporter fresh out of journalism school (undergrad) and I was still sorting out what I wanted from my journalism career, how I wanted to show up in a newsroom and what it meant to bring my "voice" into my writing -- which I'd heard so much about. What was my voice? How do I bring that into a newsroom, or into my writing work? Power of Diverse Voices gave me so much clarity.
What stays with me most from Power of Diverse Voices ([link removed]) is the sense of empowerment that came with learning specific techniques I could use immediately, receiving real-time writing feedback from expert faculty and making new connections with other, more experienced writers. It reaffirmed that journalism is made better by the diverse voices that occupy this space, and that encouraged me to bring my full self into every newsroom I entered.
I left with so much more confidence in my voice, and in what it meant to inject my voice, my experiences and myself into my writing. And it was my first time seeing a St. Pete sunset which is always breathtaking. I was forever changed.
🙋‍♀️ What did you learn that you still use today?
Techniques to find (well, keep) ideas: Saving bits of research and conversations that stick with me, having new conversations with new people, eavesdropping in public places, keeping lists of observations, and more. Your voice is informed by every experience you've ever had, and it's important to be a good steward of those memories and experiences so you can transmute them. There is power in leaning into who you are, and that sticks with me.
There are also so many specific writing techniques and tools from Roy Peter Clark that I still swear by: Getting the name of the dog, ordering words for emphasis, saving string, using dialogue as action.
🙋‍♀️ Which part of the curriculum did the most to enrich your writing?
It's hard to choose, but I think our small close-reading groups where we received feedback on essays we were crafting from both our peers and our expert faculty. I came to the workshop with an idea and left with a strong essay draft, and tons of new ideas.
