SIGN NOW: Demand governors in every state REJECT efforts to rig voting maps for partisan gain >>
John, Texas Republicans are launching a dangerous race to the bottom – and they’re daring every other state to follow.
Under pressure from Trump’s desperate team, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is trying to force the state to draw new voting maps.
Why? So vulnerable House Republicans – worried they might lose their seats after voting to pass Trump’s unpopular and destructive agenda – don’t have to face voters next year. [1]
These politicians are scared of a fair fight – and of having to defend their decisions to their constituents who they just ripped off to make billionaires richer. So instead of trying to convince voters, Trump, Abbott, and these cowardly members of Congress are trying to decide the outcome before a single ballot is cast.
This isn’t just a Texas problem – if they succeed here, we can expect Republicans in other states to follow suit, and now California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to retaliate by replacing his state’s fair maps with his own partisan power grab. [2]
This is precisely what Trump and Abbott want: to bait every other state into a gerrymandering free-for-all, where politicians pick their voters while the rest of us get no say. We can’t let that happen.
Sign the Petition: Every governor – Democrat and Republican – must commit publicly to rejecting any and all efforts to redraw maps for partisan gain.
John, when Trump’s Big Ugly Betrayal bill went down to the wire, only passing after hours and hours of last-minute backroom deals – we should have known that a power grab like this was in the works.
After all, the last thing a politician who voted to cut healthcare, expand Trump’s secret police, and give billionaires a tax break wants to do is explain their decision to the voters they just screwed over.
But for this incumbent-protection scheme to succeed in Texas, they need to rush through a new voting map in just 30 days, with minimal public input, to hand Trump the five more GOP seats he wants and lock in minority rule. [3]
If we don’t shut it down here, we’ll have to deal with similar tactics in states like Ohio and Missouri, where state Republicans are reportedly under pressure from Trump’s team to do the same. [4]
We’ve seen these tactics before – and with your help we can stop them.
California Common Cause led the push for the state’s independent redistricting commission because politicians shouldn’t get to choose their voters. [5] These citizen-led commissions are a proven solution to ensure every community has a voice and a fair chance to be heard.
But now Trump and Abbott are trying to blow it all up – and drag the rest of the country down with them. Our path forward is simple: Stop the power grab in Texas, block retaliation in California and other states, and take redistricting out of politicians’ hands nationwide.
If you’re with us will you add your name now? Tell governors in all 50 states to hold the line against gerrymandering >>
Our right to fair representation is bigger than anything self-interested politicians like Donald Trump, Greg Abbott, and Gavin Newsom can throw at us. Your action will help us draw a line in the sand and stop these partisan power grabs for good.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
