Last night, during rush hour, a gunman armed with an assault rifle opened fire on a crowded office building in Midtown Manhattan. Four people were killed, more injured, and countless traumatized from yet another mass shooting.

What began as a Monday like any other turned into a nightmare – as the day was coming to a close, shots rang out on multiple floors of a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. People hid in bathrooms, barricaded themselves in conference rooms, and hoped that they would make it home.
A gunman armed with an AR-15 style assault rifle, shot and killed four people, one of them an off-duty New York Police Officer working security at the building.
Friend, this heinous attack is the deadliest shooting in New York City in over two decades and it was made possible by easy access to weapons of war. One survivor of the shooting described a sense of knowing amongst her young peers – they had gone through active shooter drills in school, had grown up fearing the inevitable shooting that would befall them.
Friend, mass shootings shouldn’t be inevitable, but this is the reality of our country – one that values unfettered access to weapons of war over the safety of its citizens.
This time, a weapon of war was used to wreak havoc on a crowded New York City office building, and if we fail to finally rid our streets of assault weapons, the next deadly attack is all but guaranteed… Next time it could be another workplace, or a church, or a school — no piece of normal American life is safe from gun violence when our lawmakers refuse to address it as the epidemic that is.
