After two successful terms as governor, Governor Tony Evers announced last week that he's not running for re-election.

I want to take a moment to say: Thank you, Tony!

For five decades, Tony has been a steady, principled, and effective public servant. Whether standing up for civil rights, passing much needed tax relief for working families, or fixing the damn roads, his leadership has improved daily life for people across our state.

And of course, from his first years as a science teacher in Baraboo to his final term as governor, Tony has fought hardest for our kids : securing funding for K‑12 special education, making child care more affordable, and of course, his historic "400‑year school funding" veto that locked in per‑pupil funding increases until the year 2425.

Above all, Governor Evers has led this state with compassion and common sense, even in the face of relentless, often ridiculous, political opposition. Through it all, he never lost sight of what matters most: doing the right thing for the people of this state.

I had the privilege of working alongside Tony as State Treasurer, and I was honored when he appointed me to serve as Secretary of State. In the last few years, I've gotten to know Governor Evers not just as a leader, but as a genuinely good person. He cares deeply about Wisconsin – about our values, our kids, and our future. (And yes, a good game of Euchre!)

And I know this: we're a better Wisconsin because of Tony's leadership. And I'm better for having had the chance to serve alongside him.

As we move forward, I'm spending time talking with my family and people around the state about how I can best continue to serve Wisconsin in this next chapter.

But today, I just want to express my gratitude.

Thank you, Governor Evers, for your years of service and for always putting Wisconsin first.
