There’s an important difference between loving Israel and remaining silent in the face of this Israeli government’s agenda of endless war and devastation. It’s past time for our community to decide where we stand.

We are in a moment of profound moral crisis.

If the extremist agenda of this Israeli government is not stopped, not only is Israel at risk and the safety of Jews globally endangered, but the very soul of the Jewish people is at stake.

Since October 7, our hearts have broken again and again – for the victims of that horrific atrocity, for hostages brutally taken by Hamas, for families of soldiers killed in battle and for thousands upon thousands of families in Gaza whose lives have been shattered by relentless bombardment, displacement and loss.

Through it all, far too many of the Jewish institutions and communal leaders we’ve long looked to for guidance – the ones who claim to speak for us – have been far too silent.

Silent as the Israeli government abandons hostages in favor of endless war.

Silent in the face of unspeakable brutality in Gaza.

Silent as settlers wreak terror in the West Bank.

Silent as hundreds of thousands of Israelis take to the streets calling for an end to the war.

Friends, I worry that our collective silence is complicity – and we must grapple with that.

Endless war, occupation and annexation don’t bring us any closer to safety, far from it – and the silence surrounding our community implicates us in the very injustices we should be opposing.

That’s why I’m asking you to help end the silence. To demand that our Jewish leaders speak out. To stand for our values with courage and say that the horrors unfolding in Gaza cannot be justified, and to demand the Israeli government end this war and bring the hostages home now.

This is about fighting for Israel’s future. As important, it’s about fighting for the soul of our own community.

Jewish values call us to pursue peace, justice and dignity for all. That includes the hostages and their families. That includes the children of Gaza. That includes Palestinians under occupation.

So please, join us in a national Jewish call for vocal opposition now. Raise your voice. Join us in pressing our synagogues, federations and neighbors too. Together, we can make a difference.
