As we’ve seen, the world is rapidly changing, and as technology advances, misogyny, and gender-based violence are developing in new and frightening ways. Doxing, AI-generated deepfakes, and even abuse in the metaverse are disproportionately harming women and girls, negatively affecting inclusion and opportunity. The urgent need for international and national laws to combat this technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) grows increasingly apparent, as does the need for Equality Now’s work.
Our legal expertise, survivor-centered approach, and commitment to gender equality make us well-positioned to ensure women and girls can have a digital future that works for them, not against them. Already, we have two significant victories under our belt. We:
- Advocated to ensure the Global Digital Compact, an international agreement meant to ensure a free and secure digital future for all, incorporated a standalone principle on gender equality and commitments to addressing sexual and gender-based violence that occurs through or is amplified by the use of technology.
- Supported the passage of the Take It Down Act, a federal bill that will require online platforms to remove non-consensual intimate images, including deepfakes, within 48 hours of request.
And we continue to inspire change, for example, in Latin America and the Caribbean, where we are supporting efforts to draft a model law to prevent, punish, and eradicate TFGBV against women.
