Team, Senate Republicans are coming after public broadcasting at Donald Trump’s orders. 

I introduced an amendment to protect public broadcasting and unbiased reporting from far-right attacks. To no surprise, Republicans blocked it — and proceeded to rip over a billion dollars away from local television and radio stations like NPR and PBS.

Why? To silence reporters, dismantle independent media, and weaken our democracy.

Trump and his administration have an ongoing track record of attacking anyone who criticizes their actions — protestors, reporters, college students, and now public broadcasting.

As these cuts stand, local television and radio stations that provide potentially lifesaving weather alerts will shut down, and rural stations will be the first to close. It’s not an exaggeration to say this will have disastrous consequences.

In pursuit of silencing dissent, Trump and extreme Republicans have taken their cruelty to new heights, severing lifelines for rural communities and small towns. To my Republican colleagues, I ask: What are we doing here?
