Candice Fortin with 350 Action here, back to share the latest on our newest campaign, Our Cities, Our Roots.
This week, we’re kicking off our scorecard project. We’re sending out surveys and asking mayoral candidates across the country to respond to a series of questions about their positions on climate.
Next up, we’ll grade their responses and create scorecards to share with voters on where their candidates stand. Read the survey questions and follow along on our website, where we’ll be publishing scorecards as they’re released.
Our Cities, Our Roots is laser focused on local governments — one place where we can combat Donald Trump’s far right agenda right now. We’re releasing scorecards for mayoral races in 4 major cities to help voters understand who will advance pro-climate, pro-justice legislation at the local level. Because we know that local governments can have an impact far beyond the city limits.
In Chicago, for example, Mayor Brandon Johnson enacted legislation requiring all city-owned buildings to run on 100% renewable energy by 2035 — a move that will cut Chicago’s carbon footprint by 290,000 metric tons each year.
And San Francisco has passed clean energy and climate initiatives that have gone on to influence California, the West Coast, and the entire nation.
Here are just a few of the things we’re asking this year’s mayoral candidates in Detroit, New Orleans, Seattle and Boston to pledge their support for:
First up is Detroit — a city beleaguered by air pollution from the Stellantis auto plant, utility shutoffs and rate hikes, and a legacy of environmental racism. We’ll be releasing our scorecard of Detroit’s 2025 mayoral candidates later this month — keep an eye out for it on our website!
Of course, our work doesn’t end after Election Day. After this year’s mayoral races are over, we’ll move into accountability mode — monitoring the winning candidates to ensure they’re following through on climate promises made during the election.
We couldn’t do any of this without climate defenders like you by our side. Thank you for everything you do.
