Last month, pro-lifers gathered for peaceful demonstrations outside of more than 200 Planned Parenthood locations throughout the country as part of Live Action-led Defund Day. Our nation’s leaders took notice, and just days later, Planned Parenthood was defunded for one year.
This was a first-its-kind-endeavor by Live Action, and in the days surrounding the event, I learned something surprising as I talked with demonstration leaders: many participants were first-timers.
In some cases, leaders shared with me that more than half of attendees at their demonstrations had never participated in an event of this kind. Even among the leaders, many were stepping up for the first time. For approximately 1 in 4 event leaders, Defund Day was their first experience with this kind of activism.
By just receiving the invitation to stand up, many people who had never set foot on a sidewalk outside an abortion facility felt called and inspired to take a stand with us that day.
This is the power and responsibility of leadership. Because of the credibility Live Action has built over the last decade in the pro-life movement, we were able to rally people from coast to coast (and beyond) to come together and declare with one voice that Planned Parenthood must be defunded.
