➤➤ BREAKING: North Carolina Republicans want to ban election officials from encouraging turnout

This isn’t subtle, John.

North Carolina GOP lawmakers are pushing a new bill that would criminalize nonpartisan voter outreach by election officials — including efforts like reminder calls, polling place assistance, and educational materials.

Let’s call it what it is: state-sanctioned voter suppression. Why? Because when officials can’t encourage participation, fewer people vote — and turnout drops especially in marginalized communities.

This move isn’t happening in a vacuum. It’s part of a nationwide trend, emboldened by Trump’s executive order targeting election offices. Now Republicans are turning it into law — one state at a time.

The good news: Democrats are fighting hard to stop it. Democratic allies like the NAACP and League of Women Voters are organizing, training, and preparing to battle this bill at every turn.

This is why DASS exists. We build the infrastructure to protect election officials, push back against voter suppression laws, and support the Secretaries of State who defend democracy on the front lines.
