For background: The opponents of voting rights who run Texas have opened a special "emergency session" of the state legislature to tackle another round of partisan redistricting, after having recruited the top national conservative map-drawer and a leading Washington, D.C.-based anti-voting group to ram through a new gerrymander that aims to expand the U.S. House majority.

These new maps aim to dilute the voting power of the state’s Black and brown voters, looking to follow Trump's orders to create five new MAGA-aligned congressional seats in Texas.

This is all part of a sweeping national strategy that uses map-drawing to boost one party’s power at the expense of non-white voters and is now playing out at the local level. 

How do we know? The D.C.-based attorney who oversaw much of these redistricting fights for a conservative law firm just took over as the top anti-voting lawyer at the MAGA version of the Justice Department.

The involvement from the start of national-level anti-voting operatives highlights the striking sophistication and coordination of this multi-pronged campaign to suppress our democracy.

This isn't some secret cabal trying to steal our power. This is happening in plain sight, with little media attention, directed from the Oval Office and being run from a party headquarters. Protecting our right to vote means stopping them.
