Dear Housing Not Handcuffs supporter,
Everybody needs a safe place to live. But instead of helping people, politicians in Kentucky passed a bill that makes it a crime to be homeless. This law, backed by the Cicero Institute— right-wing billionaires with ties to the Trump administration— has clogged up courts, made homelessness worse, and even resulted in a woman in active labor being ticketed for sleeping outside. As a reminder, this is the same law that allows people to hurt and even kill homeless people who are sleeping on private property.
A new documentary from our partner, Invisible People, shows the devastating impact that this anti-homeless law has had on Kentuckians. Watch and hear directly from people whose lives have been made worse and homelessness prolonged by the Cicero Institute’s cookie-cutter legislation. This 35-minute video shows what we all know to be true: jails and fines make homelessness worse, and the only real way forward is ensuring everyone has the housing and support they need to thrive.
