Every summer growing up, I spent time at my grandparents’ house in Overland, an inner-ring St. Louis suburb. After raiding their pantry for cookies, I usually found my way upstairs to an old vanity in the front guest room. Inside the vanity’s drawers were boxes of treasures, including tiny lipstick samples from the Mary Kay lady and lovely old handkerchiefs.
I’ve been thinking about Poynter’s archives with the same anticipation that I had while running up the creaky staircase at my grandparents’. I just knew I’d find delightful things.
And I did.
To celebrate Poynter’s 50th, I got to search, discover and curate a list of 50 timeless writing and storytelling tips ([link removed]) . You can also see the graphics we made of them in a printable/shareable PDF format here ([link removed]) .
As someone who treasured Poynter long before I worked here, I loved getting to rediscover the work of people who’ve helped shape our industry, including Roy Peter Clark, Chip Scanlan, Tom Huang, Matt Thompson, Lauren Klinger and Al Tompkins, but also newer colleagues, including Fernanda Camarena, TyLisa Johnson, Amaris Castillo, Angela Fu and Alex Mahadevan.
My current favorite from this list: Good writing is not magic, it’s a process. I hope you enjoy!

Sarasota, FL Event: Poynter’s 50th Anniversary Exhibit
Step into the story of how journalism has changed and where it’s headed. Poynter’s "Moments of Truth: An Exploration of Journalism’s Past, Present, and Future" exhibit runs August 4–11 at The Ringling, featuring interactive displays and a free week of media literacy events. The week culminates in a thought-provoking community conversation with leaders in journalism and AI, examining how emerging technologies are reshaping the truth behind the images we see. Register here. ([link removed])
While you’re here:
* I’ll be writing a lot more about this as it develops, but I’m thrilled that Poynter gets to work with Internet Archive and Investigative Reporters and Editors to help journalists and newsrooms protect and preserve their archives. ([link removed])
* From Rob Golub for Poynter, read “In the age of AI, human emotion is journalism’s superpower.” ([link removed])
* Apply ([link removed]) to attend Reynolds Journalism Institute’s Community Centered Symposium, for “30 community-centered journalists who want to come together to share and create thoughtful and actionable ways to serve our communities better.”
* Check out Catch Light Local and Prism Photo’s latest newsroom survey ([link removed]) on the state of visual journalism in local newsrooms.
* Read Nieman Lab ([link removed]) on how public media stations are appealing to supporters after losing federal funding.
That’s it for me. Thanks for reading!
