When a drug is reviewed and approved by the FDA, it means medical experts have determined it’s safe and effective. That approval process exists to ensure patients can access lifesaving medications — not just in some states, but all across the country.

However, more and more extremist politicians are trying to change that. States like Texas and West Virginia have already taken steps to ban access to FDA-approved medication like mifepristone, a safe and effective drug used in abortion care. And if they succeed, it could open the floodgates to more bans — on birth control, PrEP, cancer treatments, vaccines, and more.

That’s why Congresswoman Lori Trahan and her colleagues just introduced the Right to FDA-Approved Medicines Act. This legislation will protect access to FDA-approved medications — no matter where you live. It makes clear that states cannot override FDA authority by banning safe, effective medications for political reasons.
