Overall Crime in California Fell Last Year, but Shoplifting Continued to Rise

California saw broad declines in crime in 2024, with the overall rates of property crime and violent crime both down compared to the prior year. However, shoplifting continued to increase throughout last year and is up substantially since 2019.
