THIS WEEK’S TL;DR:

Learn to lead your leaders ([link removed]) ; writers of color — unleash the power of your voice ([link removed]) ; get tools to cover mental health equity ([link removed]) ; join diverse leaders who advanced their careers ([link removed]) ; last chance for a free research primer ([link removed]) by one of our country top researchers

------------------------------------------------------------
You’re buried in work but can’t say no. You dodge difficult conversations to avoid hurting people.
Are you accountable for major outcomes without actually managing anyone? Think: producers, project managers, engagement editors, senior reporters, communications specialists.
You’re the driving force behind critical initiatives — all the responsibility, with no team of your own.
Feeling less-than-prepared for your next step? Poynter’s Lead with Influence ([link removed]) is the career/leadership development 101 course for you.
Kathy Lu ([link removed]) , Poynter adjunct and founder of Audiencibility, walks you through this four-week program to learn more about yourself so you can better work with others.
See what Kathy has to say:

🙋‍♀️ Which part of the course curriculum delivers the biggest boost?
Kathy: Meeting new people and learning you're not in this alone. Every session, someone says it's nice to know they're not alone in their challenges. This is true! We can feel isolated in our jobs, so being in a cohort with others facing similar issues is affirming. And being able to work through those issues with your peers is empowering.
🙋‍♀️ Give our informal leaders your three best tips.
Kathy:
1. Assume positive intent. Sometimes, we can misinterpret reactions. To avoid misunderstandings, assume the person means well and be curious about the why behind their behavior.
2. Communicate, communicate. Especially in a remote and hybrid work culture, it's better to over-communicate than under-communicate. The more clarity and transparency you can provide, the better it is for everyone involved.
3. You have more power than you think. Being an informal leader means you've been entrusted with big responsibilities. You may not have direct power, but you have relational and informational power. You know how to get things done, and you're strengthening relationships along the way. Don't underestimate how far this can take you.

Want to set yourself up for success? Bad news: There’s just over a week left before applications close for Lead with Influence. Good news: There’s still time to sign up ([link removed]) for our September cohort.
Get the tools and training to be the most effective informal but influential leader you can be. Apply today ([link removed]) for this year’s last Lead with Influence. 🚀
