Don’t Blame Texas

What to Know: California Gov. Gavin Newsom claims the “vast majority” of homeless people in San Francisco come from Texas.

The TPPF Take: Even Politifact calls this claim “ridiculous.”

“The homelessness crisis in California is entirely due to that state’s policies,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Newsom, first elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors at the age of 29, has been in public office for 22 consecutive years with direct responsibility for the myriad of policies that bear on the homeless population, from limits on involuntary commitment to law enforcement policies.”

Listen to the Helpers

What to Know: San Antonio has formed a commission to—finally—listen to stakeholders about its mandatory paid sick leave ordinance.

The TPPF Take: They should listen to stakeholders like Anna Hundley of the Autism Treatment Center, who says her agency would be forced to cut back its services to comply with the ordinance.

“Our employees are important to us and we strive to provide competitive wages and benefits,” she says. “But the decisions we make in how to do so should be our decisions—not City Hall’s.”

Of Course It Does

What to Know: A new report in Contemporary Pediatrics says a child’s mental health is impacted by contact with the Child Protective Services system.

The TPPF Take: That’s why a new policy proposed in a recent Time magazine article is so disturbing; it urges doctors to “think less, screen more” in an effort that will result in more children going into CPS custody.

“Most children who enter the foster care system will stay there for a little over a year, and less than half will ever return home to their parents,” says TPPF’s Andrew Brown. “Separating children from their families has long-term negative consequences and is a decision that should not be taken lightly.”
