John — We need to talk about Republicans’ latest effort to undermine the census through two extreme anti-voter bills.
The “Equal Representation Act” would add a citizenship question to the census and require the census to exclude residents who are not citizens — something that is overtly unconstitutional.
And Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene’s “Making American Elections Great Again” bill would be even more extreme. The Trump-backed proposal orders the federal government to immediately conduct a new census — unconstitutionally excluding all non-citizen residents of the United States — in order to redraw the maps before the 2026 midterms.
Here’s why this matters:
"The absurd and blatantly unconstitutional measures being proposed by MAGA Republicans to manipulate the census — which are premised on the decidedly debunked Big Lie — would strip millions of Americans of representation, simply to pursue Trump’s reckless partisan agenda.”
— John Bisognano
President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee
In 2020, the fair maps movement successfully defeated a similar racist and unconstitutional attempt to add a citizenship question to the census. Now, in the face of an even more brazen attempt to seize illegitimate power, the NDRC is committed to fighting back even harder. As NDRC President John Bisognano lays out, we absolutely must defeat these anti-democracy attacks:
"A fair and accurate census — which the Constitution explicitly requires be based on the ‘whole number of persons’ living in our country — is essential to ensure equal representation in Congress and appropriately determine how billions in federal funding should be shared across communities for critical resources like hospitals, roads and schools. Congress must reject this dangerous attempt to disenfranchise Americans, undermine the accuracy of the census, and give Republicans an opportunity to further gerrymander ahead of the 2026 midterms — but if it is passed and signed it will be challenged immediately, on clear and obvious grounds.”
We can’t sit by while anti-democracy extremists attack our democracy’s most basic principles. At the NDRC, we’re not just working to defeat attempts to manipulate a fair count in the 2030 Census — we know that the fight for fair maps requires electing Democracy Defenders across the country. And with MAGA extremists ramping up their assault on our rights, we need grassroots support to drive that work forward.
