When President Trump was asked about Texas’s sudden plans to redraw its congressional map, he let the entire cat out of the bag.

Look, it’s extremely rare for states to voluntarily redraw their electoral maps mid-decade. The New York Times reported last month that the White House was putting pressure on state lawmakers in Texas to *literally* go back to the drawing board and create more Republican House seats. And last week, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that they’d try to push new redistricting at a special legislative session. 

In this clip, President Trump admits they want a “simple redrawing where we pick up five seats.” 

It gets worse. President Trump went on to hint that this is part of a larger strategy to manipulate maps ahead of next year’s election, adding, “We have a couple [of] other states where we’ll pick up seats also.”

This is a fight the National Democratic Redistricting Committee was built to win — in fact, fights like this are exactly why we exist. For our democracy’s sake, we must stop radical gerrymandering from being used as a strategy to win elections.
