Stand Up for Women’s Safety

Dear John,

Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent, and devastating human rights violations in our world today. In America alone, over 1 in 3 women have experienced rape, physical violence, and or/ stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

NOW is on the frontlines of curbing—and eventually ending—violence against women in all of its forms. But we need help from dedicated supporters like you to expand the reach of our movement’s work.

That’s why I’m asking you to make a gift of $20, $40, or more to NOW today. Your giving will help ensure that our advocates and organizers have the resources they need to fight for a future where women and girls are safer at home, in schools, at work, and online.

Thanks, in no small part, to kind members of our community, NOW teams mobilized support for the Take It Down Act, which was recently signed into law. The act zeros in on one of the most pernicious threats to women’s safety—the theft of our bodily autonomy through deepfake images used to harass and exploit women and girls.

The new law requires platforms to offer a request-and-removal system where victims can report abuse and have their pictures taken down within 48 hours. However, this legislation only applies to public-facing platforms like social media networks, leaving the countless hidden private forums where victims may never know their images appear unexamined.
So, as we acknowledge this win, we know it’s just the first step in many more to go, and your generosity will be essential to further strengthening protections for women and girls online and offline.

But we’re not just fighting for policy shifts. We’re also calling for a shift in an unjust culture that glorifies toxic masculinity and gives permission to misogyny and sexual violence.

Right now, we live in a culture that doesn’t see women as whole people and desensitizes far too many people to violence, so abuse remains constant. This must change, and it’s on our community to reshape the culture.

John, the work before us calls for fighting on multiple fronts, and we can’t do that without your energy and generosity powering our work. Please make as generous a gift as you are able to NOW today to fuel the fight to ensure that women and girls can live in safety.
