Dear Friend,
The start of summer 2025 has brought a troubling escalation in attacks on press freedom, both in the United States and globally, as authoritarian powers grow bolder and a second Trump presidency continues to erode press freedom norms we've long taken for granted.
In a deeply concerning development, Mario Guevara, a Spanish-language journalist who has reported on immigration issues in the Atlanta area for over two decades, was detained while livestreaming a “No Kings” protest in mid-June. He was charged with three misdemeanors and denied bond after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer, despite his legal status in the U.S. at the time of arrest. CPJ is leading the charge in demanding that ICE obey a federal judge’s order and #FreeMario immediately.
Every attempt to silence a reporter is a threat to the public’s right to know.
At a time when voices like Mario’s are more vital than ever, we are using your support to stand up for press freedom and push back against these attacks.
Here’s how:
Thank you, as always, for your steadfast support. We draw strength from your commitment, and hope you’ll be inspired to keep fighting by the courage of journalists who continue reporting the truth, no matter the obstacles.
With resolve,
John Weis
