Dear Friend,
When devastating floods swept through Texas over the July 4th holiday, the lives of countless families were upended—and when families suffer, so do pets. Thanks to our community’s compassion, 22 vulnerable dogs are now safe at the PAWS Chicago Kocourek Medical Center—but many more still need urgent help ([link removed]) .
Many of you have been following along with our rescue efforts, so we wanted to share the latest updates—and introduce you to some of the dogs and puppies our community has helped save!
On Monday afternoon, PAWS volunteers drove 500 miles to the Nebraska City Municipal Airport, where they met a Wings of Rescue flight carrying precious cargo. The dogs and puppies on board came from Concho Valley PAWS, a rescue organization based in San Angelo, Texas.
These survivors were safe, but only half-way home. Switching from airplane to rescue van, they began the final leg of their journey.

Upon their arrival late Monday night, they were greeted by the tender touch of our PAWS volunteers, intake, and medical teams who nurtured each pet with love and nourishment after a very long journey across the country.
Included in this group was Cosette (see image below), a mahogany mixed-breed girl with soulful eyes and ribs showing through her fur— signs of what she has already endured in her short life. Malnourished and shy at first, she stole the volunteers’ hearts with her hesitant wiggles and gentle kisses—and once she warmed up, she was literally eating out of their hands. She’s safe now at our Medical Center, and because of the love she’s already experiencing with caring humans, she fell into a restful sleep Monday night surrounded by her new favorite stuffies.

Many of the dogs who made the journey are underweight, and all are desperate for affection and connection. These pets were in shelters before disaster struck. By welcoming them to PAWS, we open much needed space in local rescues to help pets who are lost or separated from their families. At PAWS Chicago, each pet is now receiving the comprehensive medical treatment and care they need to heal and prepare for their new lives in Chicago.
Help Still Needed
Later today, we will be welcoming our second Texas transport from Austin Pets Alive!, a rescue organization that has been on the ground since the flooding began, supporting overwhelmed Texas shelters and leading lifesaving rescue and recovery efforts in the hardest-hit communities. Here’s how you can help:
* Donate to the PAWS Disaster Relief Fund ([link removed]) to provide medical care for these animals and to support future rescue efforts.
* Apply to foster ([link removed]) . We continue to need foster homes to make room for these pets—plus the Chicago animals coming in every day. Please consider opening your home to a pet in need. ([link removed])
* Sign up to volunteer ([link removed]) . You can be part of the team that goes on rescue missions or cares for pets once they are safe at PAWS. Volunteers are the life force of PAWS Chicago.
Help Homeless Pets in Need ([link removed])
For the past 20 years, PAWS has been dedicated to natural disaster rescue relief—from our first rescue missions for Hurricane Katrina to today. Our Chicago community always answers the call when there is an emergency. Your compassion and commitment make this work possible.
Thank you for being there when pets need you most.
