John,
Just over a week ago, President Trump signed a massive budget bill into law.
It’s expected to add more than $3 trillion to the national debt, make tax cuts that will mostly benefit the wealthiest Americans, cut Medicaid access and much more.
While many of the effects of the bill are clear, we’re left to guess about one thing: how much Trump and his family stand to profit from the bill.
Trump again refused to divest from his businesses when he took office, so we know he's making money from the Trump Organization, crypto, a media company and more. But it’s unclear exactly how much Trump will profit from the changes in the budget bill, since he is the first president elected since Nixon to refuse to release his tax returns.
We’ll break down more about Trump’s finances and what this bill means below. But here’s the bottom line: CREW is leading the fight to expose corruption and demand accountability at the highest levels of government. If you believe the public deserves answers—not secrecy—chip in today to power our work for a more transparent democracy→
John, there are plenty of tax changes in the bill that could help Trump save money on his taxes.
For example, the bill expands existing tax breaks for commercial real-estate investors and developers and will allow property firms to deduct 100% of expenses for improving their properties.
As one analyst said, “If you own certain kinds of closely held businesses, you get to claim a huge tax cut. So for example, if you are a real estate developer or you own golf clubs, you just arbitrarily pay a lower tax rate.”
Does that sound familiar, John? To us, it sounds a whole lot like Donald Trump.
The bill also made the “Opportunity Zones” program permanent, which Jared Kushner benefited from during Trump’s first term—raising ethics concerns given Ivanka Trump’s work on the program.
This Trump-backed bill will significantly impact the finances of everyday Americans, so it’s important that the public understand how the bill will help Trump personally—and that starts with being transparent with his own tax returns.
CREW is committed to holding Trump accountable and fighting for transparency for the American public. If that’s something you can get behind, donate now to support our work to hold Trump accountable and demand transparency in our government→
