Dear friend,
I’m writing to you with a slightly different message than usual.
In the last few weeks, we have seen the world erupt and huge numbers of people galvanise against racism. The killing of George Floyd on 25 May 2020 sparked a wave of resistance ([link removed]) , thousands upon thousands in cities and towns across the world have been sending out a clear message: Black Lives Matter.
Jubilee Debt Campaign stands with the Black Lives Matter campaign.
We know from our work that much of the historical roots of the global south debt crisis lie in colonialism and that a form of racism underpinned and grew from that system. You can read about this in more detail in our briefing on Ghana and the colonial legacy of debt ([link removed]) .
We campaign to stop unjust debt from causing poverty and inequality. A key part of bringing about this change is dismantling the systems of oppression which mean the voices, needs and rights of People of Colour are disregarded by decision-makers and society.
Many of us will have been reflecting over the last few weeks on what we can do and how we can make this not just a moment, but a turning point that leads to real fundamental change.
But sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. To help, we’ve pulled together a short list of resources, books, videos and news stories.
